Case-in International Engineers’ Championship is the largest practical contest in Russia and the CIS countries in engineering cases solving among students and graduate students. The aim of the championship is identification and promotion of the best mining, power, geology, metallurgy and oil and gas students and facilitation in their training, new competences and experience acquisition, promotion of engineering education and attraction of young specialists to the energy and mineral sectors. The championship consists of 5 independent leagues including Power industry league. Each league of the championship consists of preliminary rounds, which are organized in the universities and the final stage held in Moscow. The teams’ solutions are evaluated by a board of representatives of the federal and regional government bodies, industry experts and case specialists.

At the Siberian Federal University (SFU) the best teams of engineers were selected in three disciplines (leagues): Power industry, Oil and gas, mining.

The jury was made up of representatives of the corporate sector and academia from the leading universities of the country. Alexander Slavinsky, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Izolyator, Chair at SC D1 Russian National Committee of CIGRE joined the jury working in Power industry section of the round.

The submitted projects received evaluation under four criteria: technology or technological efficiency of proposed solutions, economy or feasibility of the projects including sources of financing, innovative value or usage of new technologies, presentation and public speaking or the quality of report presentation.

A project about voltage regulation using autonomous meteorological observing stations was named a winner in the power industry league. The Impulse team offered a technical solution enabling to have a decreased loss in corona discharge capacity in power lines.

“I liked the ingenuity of the lads and the fact that they keep moving in spite of the problems and offer their ideas that, I must emphasize it here, only seem unsustainable, but in fact are examples of non-standard solutions to the existing problems in production.

There’s only one “shortcoming” with the university graduates — absence of employment record, which scares off employers as everyone wants to get a trained specialist with experience. Yet, it is typical for managerial incompetence. The industry needs to cooperate with universities, talking to their future employees – students of the 2nd and third years, and the championship is a kind of such dialogue. I am confident in its use for the youth, especially if they have an opportunity to communicate with experts in relevant industries”, said Alexander Slavinsky in summation of the championship results.

Alexander Slavinsky was awarded a Thank you Letter by the Ministry of Energy of Russian Federation for his support and active engagement in Case-in championship.

The holders of the prizes places have made it to the championship’s finals to take place on 30–31 May in Moscow. They will represent their universities and compete for the opportunity to take internships in the leading companies of the country.
