The Finals of Case-in Engineers’ Championship

On 30 and 31 May 2017, Izolyator took part in the finals of the Vth jubilee International Case-in Championship in Moscow.

Case-in International Engineers’ Championship is the largest practical contest in Russia and the CIS countries in engineering cases solving among students and graduate students. The aim of the championship is identification and promotion of the best mining, power, geology, metallurgy and oil and gas students and facilitation in their training, new competences and experience acquisition, promotion of engineering education and attraction of young specialists to the energy and mineral sectors. The championship consists of 5 independent leagues including Power industry league. Each league of the championship consists of preliminary rounds, which are organized in the universities and the final stage held in Moscow. The teams’ solutions are evaluated by a board of representatives of the federal and regional government bodies, industry experts and case specialists.

The Championship has gathered 83 student teams from 48 technical universities of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, who presented solutions of engineering cases in five leagues: geological exploration, mining, metallurgy, oil and gas, power industry.

The organizers of the Championship are New Generation fund and Youth Forum of Mining Leaders NGO. CIGRE made an input as co-organizer for the Power industry league tournament.

The Championship’s finals in Moscow became a culmination of a four-month marathon consisting of 80 preliminary rounds with 3500 students participating.

The finals gathered 350 best student engineers and more than 200 experts, including Izolyator representatives, from the companies of Energy and Mining sectors.

The main part of the first day was dedicated to defending engineering cases. Within 10 days the finalists solved five engineering cases, created with materials from the companies of Energy and Mining sectors of Russia and based on real production objectives and problems.

To evaluate those solutions, 5 expert committees, counting over 100 managers and specialists from leading companies, were formed.

The expert committee of the power industry league included Izolyator’s Alexander Slavinsky, Chairman of the Board of Directors, SC D1 RNC CIGRE Chairman and Vladimir Ustinov, Deputy Quality Director and SC D1 RNC CIGRE Coordinator.

The objective of the case, called Energy of Zabaikalye Treasures, is to make an analysis of the Zabaikalsky krai power system active power balance in time perspective, offering models of development in operational, mid term and long term perspectives, also taking into account construction of new power plants and connection of new industrial consumers during given time perspectives.

The winners in the Power industry league are Case-masters 3000 team from the Novosibirsk State Technical University. The second place was given to the Energy team from the Samara State Technical University. The third place — to the Young Energy team from Sayano-Shushensky branch of the Siberian Federal University.

In addition to the best engineers’ student team award, the Championship winners are included in the talent pool of the fuel and energy and mining sectors and will take part in industry related summer educational programs Mining school and Energy of youth.
